CES 2013 was a phenomenal experience. We met lots of startups with unseen technologies that aimed to better society. Wallstreet’s MarketWatch posted an article depicting GeckoCap as one of the 10 Quirkiest Gadgets at the show, referring to products that “…meld peculiarity and innovation”.
“One in 10 kids has asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and kids are more likely than adults to have an attack.
With that in mind, the forthcoming Gecko Caps medication-management system aims to keep kids on their doctor-recommended regimen. Caps, which fit over the top of any inhaler, collect data on usage. If your child has a smartphone, the device can sync automatically with the app (otherwise, it must be uploaded). Parents can look at the app to track usage over time, set a schedule of reminders that cause a particular cap to light up when it’s time to use, and get alerts if the inhaler wasn’t used at its schedule time. The data collected can also be compiled into a report for your doctor, says Dr. Yechiel Engelhard, founder and chief executive of GeckoCap. Kids get an app dashboard too, that awards them for consistent inhaler use and includes games that teach them about better asthma management.
Geckocap will be available this summer and is expected to cost roughly $40 to $50, says Engelhard. But worried parents may find that it’s best to invest in a smartphone for their kid — without one, there’s no realtime data or alerts for the use of a rescue inhalerduring an attack. (A separate dongle for such notifications is in the works, he says.”
